The SAS MAT has been developed to assist therapists with each of the 3 main steps of falls prevention therapy: assessment, instruction, and client practice.
Level 3 is the Near Tandem Stance – a measure used in the Stepping On program and others.
ASSESSMENT:
Therapists have many measures to assess clients at risk of falling. To assess balance we have popular tests including the Berg balance Scale and Near tandem stance.
However, interval and inter-rater reliability in testing can be problematic, especially in ensuring that the client is accurately repeating the same foot placements each time.
The SAS MAT ensures that measures are readily reproducible both between time intervals and different therapists. It can also allow for more nuanced testing with 5 levels of standing balance available – this should assist in avoiding ‘ceiling’ and ‘floor’ measures.

INSTRUCTION:
Falls Prevention programs such as ‘Otago’ and ‘Stepping On’ have been shown to be highly effective in reducing falls by at least 30%.*
One difficulty often encountered when running these programs is in ensuring that the exercises are done accurately to ensure that the right muscles are targeted each time.
The SAS MAT allows the therapist to guide the participant very clearly so they can understand the exercise instructions in an easy stress free manner, even during tele-health appointments.
It also allows the client to see their progress as they advance through the 5 balance levels.
The SAS 8 Week Challenge Record allows the therapist to prescribe the initial exercise program and then upgrade as desired. The client can tick the boxes when exercises are completed.
The printable exercise instruction sheets SAS GYM printouts can be placed around the rehab setting to assist with circuit type classes using the mats.
PRACTICE:
The brightly coloured footprints, lines and dots on the mat ensure that exercises are performed accurately and efficiently in both amplitude and direction. This is especially important for home practice when the therapist is not present.
The manual, exercise prescription/record sheet, and videos (available with QR code) ensure the participant is not confused following the exercises at home.
OTHER USES:
Whilst the mat has been designed to specifically assist with teaching the main exercises associated with falls prevention, it also allows for the therapist to be creative with using it for many other exercises – eg lunges, hip extension, deep squats and more dynamic exercise programs.
Therapists working in neurological rehabilitation may find it particularly helpful for instructing their clients.
